So you’re going to think I’m a little weird, but when I was a kid, I had this bizarre aversion to chocolate cake. Chocolate itself? Couldn’t get enough of it. But cake? Nah, I wouldn’t go near it. Fast forward, and I’m now a self-proclaimed adult with a serious love for the stuff. When I was diagnosed with coeliac disease, I thought chocolate cake would be the ultimate loss. So, my quest began—years of taste testing. From Tesco to Sainsbury’s, Asda to other shop brands, I’ve sampled them all. And to my pleasant surprise, I wasn’t as disappointed as I’d feared. But let me tell you, Co-op’s chocolate cake? It’s the crowned champion of gluten-free indulgence.
There is, however, one other contender, but for some reason, you can’t find it anywhere anymore: the elusive Galaxy Gluten Free Celebration Cake. It’s larger, and the chocolate? Simply divine. Yet, despite its absence, I have to say the Co-op one holds its ground and is right up there with the Galaxy Cake.
There is, of course, going to be more out there. Small bakeries are hidden gems when you discover one that sells gluten-free goodies. The big brands keep surprising us with new products now and then, so you never know—Co-op might eventually get knocked off the top spot.
