So as you all know there is so much information out there about gluten free food 🥘 . Some of it good some of it very misleading. So I thought I would put something together based on what I have learnt over the years in the hope to help you guys out.
Gluten Free food will help you loose weight
There is no evidence to support this at all. In fact, gluten-free food can have higher amounts of sugar, fat, and calories. Therefore, I have never found being on a gluten-free diet helps to lose weight.
Being gluten-free means you have give up your favorite foods like pasta, pizza and toast.
This is totally untrue. It has taken a few years, but you can now get some amazing replacements for pasta🍝 and other favorite foods🥘. Don’t get me wrong; there are some terrible alternatives, and it can be a bit hit and miss until you find the one for you. My best advice is to do your research and experiment. Once you find your new favorite brand of gluten-free pasta, you won’t feel like you’re missing out.
Gluten Intolerance is the same as Coeliac Disease
It’s crucial to make a clear distinction between these two. Coeliac Disease is a diagnosed autoimmune condition with major health impacts, one of which includes causing your immune system to attack your own body. Not following a strict gluten-free diet can seriously harm your health🩹 and may have severe future implications. On the flip side, gluten intolerance means you’re sensitive to gluten. This affects many people, and switching to a gluten-free diet will help with any symptoms they may be having. Knowing the difference is key!
Gluten-Free diet is healthier
This is a little pet peeve of mine. Sure, if you have Coeliac Disease or a gluten intolerance, it’s obviously healthier. But there’s so much misleading information out there suggesting it’s a healthy alternative diet for people without any gluten issues. Going gluten-free without having Coeliac Disease or gluten intolerance? It can actually be dangerous⛔️. Jumping on the gluten-free trend without a real need might end up doing more harm than good.
Surely a few breadcrumbs won’t hurt
Now, you wouldn’t think that a few breadcrumbs could actually hurt, but you might be surprised. For me, the worst offender is the breadcrumbs lurking in a tub of spreadable butter🧈 . To combat this, I keep my own stash of butter just in case. Taking precautions like this will avoid any ‘I’ve been glutened moments’.
Gluten Free food isn’t more expensive than food contain gluten
Generally, gluten-free food tends to be pricier💰, but with some diligent shopping, you can find cheaper alternatives. However, don’t expect your shopping receipt to be the same or cheaper. Once you go gluten-free, things do become more expensive. Sorry, friends, that’s just the gluten-free reality.
Gluten Free food is more nutritious
This myth is totally off the mark. The reality is, you might end up lacking some nutrients. When I was first diagnosed with Coeliac Disease, I had to take calcium supplements. My top advice? Speak to your doctor👩⚕️ —they’ll let you know if you need any vitamin supplements to stay on top of your game.
Gluten Sensitivity (Coeliac Disease) is uncommon
I’ve seen a couple of websites and posts claiming that gluten sensitivity is uncommon and only affects about 1% of the population. If you do the math, that’s around 80,000,000 people. That sounds really uncommon. 😂
Coeliac Disease can be cured
Coeliac Disease can’t be cured and is a lifelong disorder. However, it’s manageable with a strict gluten-free diet. Many people mistakenly believe it will eventually go away or be cured. I’ve even had people close to me say you’ll grow out of it. It’s incredibly frustrating😣, but sadly, there’s a lot of misinformation out there. Knowledge is power!
In conclusion, I strongly advise you to scrutinize online information carefully. Some websites, posts, and information I’ve seen are shockingly inaccurate and potentially dangerous.
