Coeliac Disease: The Symptoms That Keep on Giving

Claymation-style image of a distressed bearded man with a bloated belly, surrounded by sad cartoon-like symbols representing coeliac disease symptoms, including a toilet, brain, and slice of gluten-free bread.

Warning: gluten can trigger way more than just a grumpy stomach. Get ready for the full mystery box of symptoms (it’s a lot):

💩 Gut Drama: Diarrhoea, constipation, bloating, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting… basically your stomach’s version of a reality TV show.

😴 Fatigue Fest: Like you’re carrying a fridge on your back, all day, every day.

📉 Weight Loss: Who needs the gym when gluten’s doing the work for you?

⚖️ Weight Gain: When gluten decides you need a few extra pounds, whether you want them or not.

🦷 Dental Drama: Tooth enamel defects—because why stop at gut issues when you can throw in some tooth trouble too?

👩‍⚕️ Vitamin Deficiencies: You’ll be collecting vitamins like it’s Pokémon.

🤧 Skin Issues: Dermatitis herpetiformis—sounds like a villain, but it’s just an itchy rash.

🧠 Brain Fog: It’s like forgetting what you were saying… oh wait, I just did that.

🦶 Tingling & Numbness: Your hands and feet go from “I’m fine” to “Are you sure you’re still there?”

🦵 Bone & Joint Pain: Because who needs smooth moves when you’ve got creaky bones?

💔 Reproductive Roulette: Infertility, missed periods… your body really likes to keep you guessing.

🧠 Mental Health Fun: Depression, anxiety, and mood swings—you know, just a side dish.

💔 Liver on Strike: Elevated liver enzymes—because your body has to make everything complicated, right?

🤕 Migraine Madness: A pulsating head-throb that has you wishing you could just turn your brain off for a while.

😬 Mouth Ulcers: Because what’s a little ulceration to spice up your day?

💅 Deformed & Cracked Fingernails: When your nails go from fabulous to frazzled, all in the name of gluten.

🦠 Lower Immunity: Your immune system decides it’s had enough of protecting you, leaving you more vulnerable to everything that’s going around.

⚠️ Increased Risk of Bowel Cancer: Long-term untreated coeliac disease and chronic inflammation in the gut can increase the risk of bowel cancer, but following a strict gluten-free diet significantly reduces this risk.

And if you’re lucky, you get NONE of these and still have coeliac. It’s like playing the most confusing game of hide and seek.

Moral of the story: Gluten is out to get you. So if you suspect gluten’s your enemy, get tested!

FYI, I’ve just updated the list of coeliac symptoms! Added some extra details about the risk of bowel cancer and made a few tweaks to make everything more accurate. Hope it helps!

GI bleeds, sweating, racing/pounding heart. Feeling like ‘that person’ b/c you can’t eat what others eat. Doctors not having a clue about celiac and dismissing your concerns. I hate having celiac

This barely scratches the surface. But I’m not sure if the info or symptoms are different if you live in the US vs the UK.

I live in the states and have at least 15 autoimmune diseases, plus a few others I suspect I have but don’t have formal diagnoses for.

There are over 300 symptoms associated to Celiac. And every body reacts differently to gluten. I don’t think I’ve met 2 people who have the same situation.

When I experience a gluten attack, my body purges it from both ends. I was dealing with this for 5-10 years before research came out saying it was a possibility. Insanity.

Many people still associate several issues being caused directly by Celiac. Yet anything NOT ingested is caused by something related to it. Not from it directly.

I was diagnosed over 20 years ago. I’m constantly amazed by the new info that comes out constantly. Yet I’m also surprised by how many people don’t understand some of the basics of it.

Sadly I fear it will be a disease that will always be in flux when it comes to understanding it.

Some of the earlier images on this site are AI-generated because, let’s be honest, I had neither the time nor the skills to snap Pinterest-worthy photos while juggling another job. But hey, practice makes progress! These days, I’m feeling much braver behind the camera. Happy reading (and judging my photos), everyone!
