Exploring the Etymology of ‘Ben’

Daily writing prompt
Write about your first name: its meaning, significance, etymology, etc.

Ever wondered what’s behind the name ‘Ben’? It’s short, simple, and classic—but there’s actually a lot of history wrapped up in it. My first name is Ben—just Ben, no Benjamin—though I do get called Benjamin when I’ve done something wrong, at home or work!

It’s got Hebrew roots and means ‘son,’ which has always felt fitting. What’s cool is, according to my family tree, I’m the first person in my family to be named Ben. I also share my full name with the rapper Macklemore—but trust me, the singing gene didn’t make its way to me, so that’s pretty much the only thing we have in common!

The first known person with the name Ben was Ben Sira, a Jewish sage who lived around the 2nd century BCE and wrote the Book of Sirach. He’s remembered for sharing wisdom on everything from ethics to life itself. So, while it’s a simple name, there’s a lot of history behind it!

I know this has got nothing to do with gluten-free life, I just thought it was rather interesting.

Some of the earlier images on this site are AI-generated because, let’s be honest, I had neither the time nor the skills to snap Pinterest-worthy photos while juggling another job. But hey, practice makes progress! These days, I’m feeling much braver behind the camera. Happy reading (and judging my photos), everyone!
