Dragonfly Camouflage: Can You Spot It in This Photo?

A dragonfly with a black body featuring blue and yellow markings clings to a thin branch amid dense green foliage. The sunlight filters through the leaves, highlighting the insect’s delicate wings and the surrounding brambles. The dragonfly’s vibrant colours contrast with the tangle of branches and leaves, making it a striking subject in the natural setting.

Dragonflies have always fascinated me, especially since I was a kid with a small pond in my back garden. I loved watching them dart around, so I’ve always had a soft spot for these amazing aerial hunters. Despite their bold colours, though, they can be surprisingly tricky to spot. Take this Southern Hawker, for example—its bright blue and green markings blend so well with the leaves that it practically disappears. I almost missed it myself! I snapped this photo during a lockdown walk in the summer of 2020, near a local lake in Milton Keynes.

Hidden in plain sight – a stunning dragonfly blending into the greenery. Nature’s little masterpiece!

Some of the earlier images on this site are AI-generated because, let’s be honest, I had neither the time nor the skills to snap Pinterest-worthy photos while juggling another job. But hey, practice makes progress! These days, I’m feeling much braver behind the camera. Happy reading (and judging my photos), everyone!
