Being a Coeliac, there are quite a few comments you hear that make you want to scream🙀. Usually, when you correct someone, it goes smoothly, but there’s always that one person who thinks they know better than you—despite never being gluten-free. Cue the dramatic eye roll🙄 and silent internal scream.
You can have just a little gluten, right?
This one is just due to ignorance and isn’t really their fault. However, it’s one of those annoying comments that usually gets thrown around. Picture it: you’re politely nodding, fighting the urge to roll your eyes🙄, thinking, ‘Here we go again.’
Oh, I could never give up bread!
This one is a pretty ridiculous comment that gets tossed around. It’s almost as if people think we choose to eat gluten-free bread🍞 for fun. Sure, there’s some really good gluten-free bread out there, but let’s be real—some of it is downright terrible.
You’ll grow out of it.
Yes, of course I’ll grow out of it. This autoimmune disease🦠 will magically disappear as I age. (Sarcasm alert!) Not much you can say to this, to be honest, but I’ve heard this comment a couple of times. Seriously, people, it’s not a teenager’s phase—it’s a lifelong condition!
If you eat a little bit of gluten over time your body will get used to it.
Actually, that’s not how it works with coeliac disease. Even a tiny bit of gluten can send my immune system into a frenzy. It’s like telling someone with a peanut allergy to snack on peanuts🥜 to build tolerance—totally not safe or effective. But hey, thanks for the advice, Dr. Google!
