Let’s be honest—fruit has a bit of a PR problem in the gluten-free world. It’s the fallback option. The afterthought. The sad little bowl that shows up at the end of a dinner party because “we weren’t sure what you could eat.”
It’s the punchline of every gluten-free joke:
“No cake for you, but here’s a lovely… banana?”
“Sorry, no dessert – but we’ve got some melon balls!”
And don’t even get me started on the fruit skewers pretending to be pavlova at weddings.
But here’s the thing: fruit doesn’t deserve the shade. When it’s not playing understudy to gluten-filled desserts, it can actually be the star of the show. These five favourites aren’t just tolerated—they’re celebrated. And not a melon ball among them.
1. Passion Fruit
It’s the drama queen of fruit. Wrinkled on the outside, but absolutely bursting with flavour inside—like a tiny tropical soap opera. I could eat these by the spoonful (and often do). Sweet, tangy, and a little bit chaotic. Perfect.
2. Banana
I know, I know—basic. But reliable. Bananas are the HR of fruit: always there, calm, supportive, and quietly keeping your potassium levels in check. Plus, they come in their own packaging, which is very on-brand for someone who loathes washing up.
3. Strawberry
A British classic. Juicy, sweet, and the only thing that makes Wimbledon vaguely interesting to me. When they’re in season and actually taste like something, strawberries are unbeatable. Unless they’re dipped in chocolate—then they’re illegal in my house because I’ll eat the entire tray.
4. Raspberry
A bit of a wild card. Fragile little things with a big personality. You’ve got about 12 seconds to eat them before they go furry, but they’re worth the clock-watching. Sharp, sweet, and a brilliant topping on literally everything.
5. Kiwi
The oddball of the group, and I respect that. Furry on the outside, neon on the inside, and delightfully tart. I don’t care if you eat them with a spoon or like an apple (yes, some people do that)—kiwis deserve more attention. Just don’t forget to brush your teeth after.
Honourable Mentions
Blueberries nearly made it. But let’s be honest, they’re often just passengers in muffins or smoothies. Lovely, but not quite MVP material.
Your Turn:
What are your top 5? And do you peel your kiwi or just risk the texture crisis?
